What type of training does a Naturopathic Doctor receive?
ND's are graduates of a 4 year medical program that they complete after 4 years of undergraduate studies. Their training encompasses the study of basic medical sciences that include anatomy, biochemistry, histology, immunology, physiology, and microbiology. Their education also includes studies in clinical sciences that include physical and clinical diagnosis, differential diagnosis, orthopedics, physical medicine, and laboratory diagnosis. In addition to the above medical and clinical sciences, the curriculum also includes the study of the various disciplines of naturopathic medicine: botanical medicine, lifestyle counseling, nutritional sciences, physical medicine, and homeopathic medicine.
ND's complete in house residencies where they provide primary medicine to patients that are under their care while under the supervision of senior doctors. They also work as clinic interns providing treatments to patients beginning in their second year of medical studies. ND's also work in a number of mentorship positions beginning in their second year of studies where they study with a variety of doctors at their clinics.
